4 Tips For Choosing The Right Breast Implant Size

Breast augmentation is a highly personal choice -- one that requires a lot of important decisions. One of the most important (and difficult) decisions women have to make is the size they of implant they want.

Here's the thing: There's no "right" size for implants. There's only what's right for you. If you're struggling to find the right size for your breast implants, here are the top things that you need to take into consideration:

1. The shape and position you ultimately want

Breast augmentation doesn't just change the size of a woman's breasts -- it also changes their shape. Augmentation is often used to correct issues with sagging or "deflation," especially for women who have had a number of children.

You may simply want your breasts to resemble you "pre-baby" breasts as closely as possible. In that case, talk to your doctor about implants that are small enough to "perk up" your breasts without adding a great deal of size or weight.

2. The lifestyle you want to enjoy

For better or worse, breast size undoubtedly has numerous effects on a woman's life -- from the ease that she has participating in certain sports to the way other people interact with her.

Consider the things that you enjoy doing and how comfortable you are with attention on your body. If, for example, you enjoy jogging or any high-contact sports, larger implants could become burdensome. They have the potential of impeding your movements and can cause back strain far too easily. On the other hand, if you enjoy showing off your physical attributes but have never been happy with smaller breasts, large implants might be perfect for you.

3. Your preferred clothing style

This can be a somewhat tricky issue to consider because women often dress for the body they have, not the body they want.

As you picture yourself in the future, think about the way you'd like to dress if your breasts were not an issue. Do you want dramatic cleavage in your dresses and shirts? Or, do you just want perky breasts that will let you skip wearing a bra altogether? It's important to choose implants that make you feel comfortable in your own skin -- and your clothes.

4. Your body type

Implants can be subtle and look very natural -- or they can be obvious. Implants tend to be most obvious when they don't quite fit a woman's body type. For example, if you have slender hips and a small waist, very large implants will probably look unnatural to most eyes.

Knowing whether or not you want your implants to look natural -- or whether you don't really care -- is particularly important as you make your choice.

If you still aren't sure about which implants to choose, talk to your plastic surgeon and get his or her advice on the matter. Surgeons who specialize in breast augmentation have a lot of experience in this area.
