2 Questions To Ask Before Accompanying A Loved One During A Medical Flight

If you have a loved one who is traveling across the country to a medical facility for specialized care, their doctor and caseworker may have set up an air ambulance to transport them faster than an on-ground option. If you plan to accompany your loved one on the medical flight, prepare yourself beforehand by asking the service the questions below.

1.  How Many People Are Allowed to Travel on the Flight?

While the arrangements were being made at the hospital, you already found out that you are allowed to accompany your loved one while they are being transported by air. However, if another family member also wants travel, you should first ask the service about the number of people who are allowed on the flight.

The number of people that are allowed to travel with a patient could be determined by a couple of factors, including the number of patients who are being transported and the severity of their conditions.

If the flight will have several patients on a small plane, you alone may be allowed on the flight, and anyone else will have to find their own transportation. And even if there are only two or three patients of the flight, if they are very sick or have compromised immune systems, the service may wish to limit their exposure to others by limiting the number of passengers to one or two.

2.  How Much Luggage Can You Bring?

Especially if you are going to be staying with your family member while they undergo their treatments, you will need to bring a few belongings with you. The next question you should ask the flight service is about the amount of luggage you can bring with you, since there may be limited space on the plane.

Typically, you may be allowed one or two bags for your own personal use, as well as one or two for your loved one. However, you need to ask the maximum size for each piece of luggage, as the cargo hold space may not be enough to accommodate large suitcases. This is especially true if specialized medical equipment is being transported along with a patient.

Knowing what to expect before you go with your loved one during their flight can help you be better prepared for the journey. If you have any further questions, speak with a representative of the medical flight service that will transport you and your loved one.
