Choosing A Healthier Life

3 Healthy Habits To Prevent The Flu

Characterized by body aches, fever and chills, coughing, sore throat, and a general feeling of being unwell, the flu can be very uncomfortable. Not only does it cause discomfort and disrupt your daily life, but the flu can also be dangerous. As a matter of fact, recent reports showed an estimated 80,000 people died from the flu or from complications of the flu last year alone. Because of the potential discomfort and danger, protecting yourself from the flu virus is imperative. Here are a few healthy habits to follow to reduce your risk of developing the flu.

Wash Your Hands

Washing your hands properly may seem obvious, but it is actually one habit that many people do not place enough importance in.

You may also not realize how much you should be washing your hands. For example, it is not only important to wash your hands after using the bathroom, but you should also wash your hands before eating, before coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose, and after changing a dirty diaper.

Washing your hands before and after preparing food is also important for preventing the flu virus from spreading. If you are caring for a child or family member who has the flu, make sure you are constantly washing your hands.

When washing your hands, make sure to use antibacterial soap and warm or cold water. Also, most experts recommend scrubbing your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds for the most effective sanitization.

Sanitize Your Space

Other than washing your hands, you should also sanitize your personal space and important belongings to reduce your risk of developing the flu.

If someone at work has become ill with the flu, make sure to use antibacterial wipes to sanitize doorknobs, appliances, and handles. Spraying down computer and office equipment and furniture with antibacterial spray is also helpful for killing the virus.

At home, use the same techniques to sanitize doorknobs, handles, remotes, and mobile devices.

Get the Flu Shot

Most people have heard how important the flu shot is for prevention. From doctors and pharmacists to news channels, the benefits of the flu shot have been made clear. However, some people still do not receive the shot.

While there are no guarantees, the flu shot can decrease your risk of developing the influenza virus. Therefore, it can be a wise investment in your time. If you have any questions or concerns about the shot, ask your family doctor for more information.
