Risk Factors Associated With Prostate Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 174,650 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States. Aside from skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men. In addition to learning about prostate cancer symptoms, including frequent urination, weak urine retention, bone pain, and blood in the urine, it is important to understand the risk factors associated with the disease.

Here are a few of the most common risk factors associated with prostate cancer.

Age

As a man ages, his risk of developing prostate cancer also grows. Unfortunately, there is nothing that a man can do to prevent aging, which is why making lifestyle changes is the best way to lower his risk.

Here are a few things you can do to lower your risk of prostate cancer as you age:

  • Consume more fruits and vegetables. Switch out unhealthy fats with fruits and vegetables. Meats that are high in fat cause inflammation, which increases a man's risk of developing prostate cancer.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity can lead to a variety of conditions that can increase a man's risk of prostate cancer. For example, obesity can lower a man's testosterone levels, leaving him more vulnerable to the disease.
  • Get plenty of exercise. Living an active lifestyle helps maintain a healthy weight and decreases the likelihood of developing conditions that increase the risk of prostate cancer.

Before making any lifestyle changes, talk with your doctor to help you create a healthy living plan.

Race

An African American man is at much higher risk of developing prostate cancer than any other race. Although the exact reason why race plays a factor is unknown, the reason why African American men are at higher risk could be genetics and disproportionally less access to quality health care. It is critical that African American men over the age of 50 visit their doctor for a yearly prostate cancer screening, especially if there is a family history of the disease.

Exposure to Certain Chemicals

Finally, it is believed that exposure to certain varieties of pesticides and BPA, or bisphenol A, which is a toxin found in several products, such as canned foods, electronics, plastic containers, and sports equipment. Because of BPA's widespread use, it's important to read labels to determine if the product was manufactured with BPA, and if so, do not utilize it.

Understanding the warning signs and risk factors associated with prostate cancer, in addition to getting a yearly screening, is the best defense against the disease.
