Ways To Successfully "Sell" Drug Testing To Your Employees

Many business owners employ drug testing to increase the probability that their staff members aren't under the influence of drugs when they report to work. There are many different ways that you can implement drug testing, but a common one is to partner with a drug testing service and have random drug tests take place at any time that you see fit. When you announce to your staff that you're going to be implementing drug testing, you might hear some grumbles. While it's your choice as the company owner, you might want to make some points about drug testing that will help to "sell" it to your staff. Here are some points to make:

Employee Safety

The biggest point that you'll want to make about the value of drug testing is to explain how it will improve the safety of everyone in your company. Explain to your staff members how on-the-job accidents increase in likelihood when someone is under the influence of drugs, and it's not only the drug user who might be hurt. For example, if you have staff members working in a warehouse environment, a forklift operator under the influence of drugs could drop something on a colleague, run into a colleague, or otherwise do something that puts his or her colleagues in jeopardy. Drug testing will cut down on such risks.

Company Reputation

Explain to your employees that a sober workforce is good for the company's reputation. For example, if you were to have a courier driver get into an accident and the news was highly publicized because he or she was under the influence of drugs, this would hurt the company's reputation. In the big picture, a diminished reputation can lead to less business for the company — which would eventually result in layoffs because you cannot afford to keep your current staff. Stress how a sober workforce will result in less of a risk of reputation-altering incidents.

Workforce Health

You can also explain how drug testing will encourage a healthier workforce in a number of ways. For example, an employee who is under the influence of drugs may behave in an inappropriate manner — perhaps making lewd comments to colleagues or even attempting to touch them inappropriately. While you should always seek to quell this type of behavior quickly, repeated incidents of this nature can result in a workplace that doesn't feel healthy for your staff. Drug testing will reduce these types of unhealthy issues.
