Instructions To Follow After Your Vein Surgery

Varicose veins can cause leg pain and heaviness, and they often appear swollen, "ropey," dark blue, green, or purple, and in some cases, they can lead to leg ulcers. Because of this, your doctor may recommend surgery as a treatment.

Before leaving the hospital or outpatient surgical center following your surgery, you will be given a post-operative instruction sheet. It is essential that you follow these instructions provided by your surgeon to help promote healing and to lower your risk for a surgical wound infection. The following instructions will help ensure that you have a speedy and uneventful recovery following your vein treatment

Home Interventions

It is important that you get adequate rest once you get home from the hospital. Rest helps promote healing and is essential for those who had their vein surgery under general anesthesia. The effects of general anesthesia can last for days, and if you do not get enough sleep and rest, you may feel weak, dizzy, or lightheaded. In addition to rest, your instruction sheet will remind you to wear your compression stockings given to you prior to your discharge from the surgical center or hospital.

Compression stockings help promote circulation, which will speed healing and lower your risk for postoperative blood clots. You will also be instructed to keep your legs elevated, avoid strenuous activity, and avoid standing for more than a few minutes at a time. Walking will also be recommended; however, you will need to gradually build up your endurance.

Watch For Complications

You will also be instructed to watch for complications following your surgery. You will need to notify your physician if you experience extreme pain, increased bleeding, or unusual discharge seeping from your surgical wounds. In addition to these local signs of infections, you will need to call your doctor if you develop systemic infection symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, chills, weakness, fatigue, coughing, or shortness of breath.

If you have a bacterial infection, either a local infection or a systemic infection, your doctor will prescribe oral antibiotics. Notifying your vein surgeon at the first sign of infection or other complications will help ensure that you receive prompt treatment, which will help ensure a quick recovery.

After your vein treatment surgery, follow your physician's instructions. Varicose vein surgery can enhance the quality of your life by relieving pain and heaviness in your legs and by improving the appearance of your legs.
